Disney is giving fans a peek at what it took to bring Raya and the Last Dragon to life in an all new behind the scenes featurette.
Released on Thursday (February 18), the newest Raya and the Last Dragon sneak peek finds stars Kelly Marie Tran (Raya) and Awkwafina (Sisu), along with filmmakers on the project talking about what inspired the story, characters, and the martial arts sequences in the film.
“We were inspired by things about Southeast Asia to create the wholly original story and fantasy world called Kumandra,” explains Qui Nguyen, who teamed up to write the screenplay with Adele Lim.
Story aside, the all new featurette also details how Raya’s 400 plus film crew went about creating Disney’s newest animated feature film almost entirely from home amidst the ongoing pandemic.
Finally, Nguyen also spoke about being a martial arts consultant on the film and how his knowledge of Southeast Asia directly influenced the fight sequences moviegoers will see when Raya and the Last Dragon premieres next month.
“You see weapons get pulled out from Raya that are Eskrima that that come from the Philippines.” Explains Nguyen. “When you see Raya fall into a fight stance, you can go, ‘That’s Arnis. That’s Muay Thai. That’s Krabi-Krabong.’”
