A Man for all Seasons was written by a playwright, Robert Bolt, who was born in Sale, not far from Old Trafford, and his Oscar-winning screenplay is an apt description of the late-version Lancastrian, Jimmy Anderson, a master craftsman still pushing for perfection as the years tick by. All seasons, all conditions, all situations; Dukes ball, Kookaburra ball, English pitches or the dustbowls of Asia, Anderson merits respect wherever he bowls, and his performance ran like a fine, silk thread through a hard-fought first day.
